A Hike to Paul’s Tomb

I began my journey by walking from my home to Knox Mountain and hiking up the first level of the trail. Since it was the beginning of spring, the path was lined with blooming balsamroot flowers and tall coniferous trees, making the surroundings look vibrant and refreshing. Along the way, I noticed people of all ages enjoying the outdoors, whether hiking or mountain biking.

As I continued on the trail, I caught beautiful glimpses of the nearby lake, where the water shifted between greenish turquoise and deep blue shades. When I reached Paul’s Tomb, I visited the site first. Paul’s Tomb was built by Rembler Paul, an early settler in the area, as a family burial tomb near his summer property along the lakeshore. His wife was buried there first, and later Rembler Paul himself was also laid to rest in the tomb but due to repeated attempts by people to access it, the government eventually covered it with soil, leaving only the top visible.

A short walk ahead brought me to the place I had been most excited to see the lakeshore. This turned out to be the most breathtaking part of the hike. The water appeared greenish, a color created when bright sunlight reflected off the stones beneath. I sat there peacefully for a while, admiring the calm lake, the distant mountains, and the scenic landscape around me. I also walked toward a nearby cliff and spent some quiet moments there. Although I spotted a small cove below, I decided not to climb down for safety reasons. The colour is usually turquoise or aqua. The lake looks this way because sunlight reflects off minerals and fine particles in the water and lakebed, scattering blue and green light. On bright sunny days, this effect becomes stronger, making the water appear more vibrant.

The area was filled with natural beauty. I noticed different flowers, bushes, and trees, while people nearby played with their dogs and floated logs in the water. Early in the morning, the trail was relatively peaceful with fewer visitors, but as time passed, more people arrived to enjoy the surroundings. Knox Mountain is home to a variety of wildlife and plants, making it a beautiful place for nature lovers. The trails are lined with tall coniferous trees such as ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir, along with shrubs and bright yellow balsamroot flowers that bloom in spring.

On my way back, I was treated to even more stunning views. I saw eagles soaring overhead, squirrels darting around, various birds, colourful butterflies such as western tiger swallowtails, painted ladies, and cabbage whites add even more beauty to the landscape. Overall, I truly enjoyed the hike, which covered a total distance of around 12 kilometers from start to finish.

Hiking mountains is more than just physical activity for me it is a source of peace, happiness, and connection with nature. Walking through forest trails, breathing fresh air, and admiring landscapes helps me clear my mind and feel refreshed. It brings a sense of adventure and achievement while also allowing me to slow down and appreciate the beauty around me.
