I recently had the privilege of attending a once-in-a-lifetime event—the launch of Dan Brown’s new book 'Secret of Secrets', hosted exclusively by Indigo, one of Canada’s leading bookstore chains. The event took place at the historic Elgin Theatre and Winter Garden in downtown Toronto, where I arrived by subway. The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres in Toronto stand as the only remaining double-decker Edwardian theatre complex in the world, making them a remarkable historic landmark. First opened in 1913, they continue to showcase their timeless charm.

Before entering, I experienced the vintage hand-operated lift, which used a lever to move up and down—an authentic detail that added to the charm of the venue. The theatre itself, draped in maroon hues, was stunning. At the entrance of the theatre, the names of various performing arts once showcased there such as comedy, tableau, opera and burlesque—are inscribed, reflecting its rich entertainment history.

Once inside, I took my seat and listened as Mr. Richard Brown, Dan Brown’s 81-year-old father and a former mathematics professor, warmly introduced his son with lighthearted anecdotes from his teaching days. When Dan Brown entered, the audience erupted in cheers, and the touching father–son embrace on stage set the perfect tone for the evening.

Seated alongside the host, with the stage decorated by stacks of his new release, Dan Brown shared stories from his life. He spoke about the secret spots in his own home, how his first two books sold only modestly, and how 'The Da Vinci Code' transformed his career. He described his disciplined routine—rising at 4 a.m. daily—and left a lasting impression with the line: “Science and God lead to the same conclusion.” He recounted teaching creative writing while juggling two jobs before becoming a full-time author, the early days of his publishing journey, and his experiences on book tours.

The conversation also delved into the themes, characters, and symbolism of his new book, which is set in Prague and combines elements of mystery, mathematics, human consciousness and thrill. His words about perseverance and creativity were inspiring to everyone present. The theatre was packed, filled with people from diverse backgrounds who laughed, applauded, and engaged throughout the discussion.

The evening concluded with Dan Brown answering questions from the audience. As a special highlight, all attendees—including myself—received a signed first edition of 'Secret of Secrets'. His new book has come out after 8 years. Knowing that many of his works have been adapted into films and that this new one is set to become a series made the moment even more exciting.

For me, meeting the author whose books I first discovered in my school library was surreal. I never imagined I had one day sit in the same room as Dan Brown. The experience was magical, and it truly awakened the joy of my inner child.
