Lessons I Have Learnt From Hiking

Hiking has changed me in many ways. Since childhood, I have loved hiking and often climbed Parnera Hill near my city. When I moved to Kelowna, I discovered even more opportunities to explore hills and mountains. So far, my favourite hiking spot has been the Apex Trail on Knox Mountain.

Hiking is the activity of walking through natural trails, hills, or mountains for recreation, exploration, and fitness. Beyond being an outdoor adventure, hiking brings positive changes to the body and mind. It strengthens muscles, improves heart health, builds stamina, and enhances balance and flexibility. Walking on uneven terrain engages different muscle groups and burns energy while fresh air and natural surroundings help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Over time, hiking not only makes the body physically stronger but also leaves a person feeling healthier, more refreshed, and mentally stronger.

The first lesson hiking taught me is that mental strength is often greater than physical strength. Before beginning any hike, the mind must be ready. Worrying too much about time, elevation, or distance can make the journey seem difficult before it even begins. While it is good to have an estimate, fear should never take over. Every hike comes with challenges, but a determined mindset helps us face and overcome whatever stands in our way.

The second lesson I learned is to respect nature. Hiking taught me never to interfere with the natural world around me. Animals, plants, and flowing water deserve space and care. We can admire and experience nature without disturbing it. During my hikes, I often touch the trees and try to feel their presence. I once read that trees in a forest are “souls at rest,” and ever since then, I have never looked at trees as merely wood.

Another important lesson from hiking is that beauty lies not only in the destination but also in the journey itself. Photos may capture mountain-top views, but they rarely show the entire path leading there. I enjoy walking along unpaved trails, observing flowers, trees, birds, and insects around me. Listening to music, meeting fellow hikers, and sharing conversations along the way make the experience even more memorable. Reaching the summit feels rewarding, but sitting quietly at the top, feeling the cool breeze and peaceful surroundings, is what truly stays with me.

Hiking also taught me to carry only what is necessary. I usually take water, an umbrella, tissues, a fully charged phone for maps, photos, and music, along with my earphones. If the hike is short and close by, sometimes I carry nothing but my phone. Hiking reminds me that life often requires far less than we think and that simplicity can be freeing.

Hiking began as an activity I enjoyed, but over time it became something deeper, a teacher, a source of peace, and a reminder that every journey changes us in ways we do not expect.

Until next time, stay happy and healthy!
