My Outdoor Mornings

There is something special about the world in the early hours of the morning. Before the streets get busy, the phones start ringing, and the responsibilities of the day take over, there is a little window of peace waiting outside. For me, mornings outdoors have become the most favourite and important part of my day. Although I love how cosy my blanket feels, especially on cold mornings, convincing myself to leave that warmth is probably the hardest part of my entire routine! But once I step outside, I rarely regret it. The fresh air, the quiet streets, and the feeling of a new day beginning remind me why getting out of bed is worth the effort.

My mornings are usually a combination of long walks, occasional runs, and little moments that make an ordinary day feel extraordinary. I use Strava to track my walks and runs, giving me a way to measure my progress and appreciate how far I have travelled, one kilometre at a time. I love greeting people I pass along the way, exchanging smiles and wishing them a good morning. Sometimes, I find myself saying hello to their dogs, who often seem just as excited to meet a stranger. These tiny interactions make me feel connected to the community, even when I am walking alone. Then there are the unexpected encounters with deer, quietly appearing along the trails or near the roads, reminding me that I share this place with so many other living beings. I never know exactly what I might see when I step outside, and perhaps that little element of surprise is part of what makes every morning special.

One of my favourite sights is the sunrise spreading across the Okanagan Valley. Watching the first light touch the mountains, reflect across the landscape, and slowly brighten the sky is a beautiful reminder of how much happens in the world while most of us are still asleep. Some mornings, the mountains appear in soft shades of blue and purple; on others, the sky glows with orange, pink, and gold. My camera helps me capture these fleeting moments, whether it is a beautiful sunrise, a mountain view, or wildlife appearing unexpectedly along my route. I know a photograph can never fully recreate the feeling of standing there, watching the world wake up, but it allows me to revisit those memories long after the morning has passed. I often use Google Notes to plan my day, too, gathering my thoughts and organising my priorities before the daily rush begins. In a way, these small habits help me capture both the world around me and the thoughts within me.

Music is another part of my outdoor routine that I cherish. Spotify accompanies many of my walks and runs, with favourite songs making the kilometres feel shorter and the movement more enjoyable. Other mornings, I prefer to listen to the sounds around me: birds calling from the trees, leaves rustling in the breeze, footsteps on the pavement, or the distant sounds of a waking neighbourhood. I also use Muse for mindfulness, giving myself a chance to practise being present rather than constantly thinking about what comes next. Walking and running can help regulate the body's stress response, while regular physical activity supports cardiovascular health, improves sleep, and benefits mood. Gentle movement and time outdoors may also help ease feelings of stress and anxiety. Although I do not step outside every morning thinking about the science behind it, I can feel the difference when I make time for myself this way. My mind feels clearer, my body feels more awake, and the day seems a little easier to approach.

I love admiring the beautiful gardens in front of people's homes. There is always something new to notice: colourful flowers, leafy plants, towering trees, birds chirping in the branches, cats casually crossing the street, and tiny insects going about their day. Some homes have little kitchen gardens where squash, pumpkins, apples, pears, carrots, and beans grow together, while others are filled with vibrant flowers in every colour imaginable. A few have nothing more than a single tree or a stretch of neatly maintained grass, yet each garden has its own charm. I enjoy discovering new routes for my morning walks and runs, finding beauty in places I might never have noticed otherwise. However, the Rail Trail remains one of my favourite routes, especially because it is a popular shared pathway for cyclists, walkers, and runners. Seeing so many people outdoors, each enjoying the morning in their own way, adds to the simple joy of being part of a community that embraces the outdoors.

What I appreciate most about my mornings is that they give me something that is often difficult to find during the rest of the day: time with myself. There is no pressure to be productive every second, achieve something extraordinary, or have all the answers. I can simply walk, run, observe, breathe, and think. Being surrounded by mountains and open skies puts my worries into perspective. Even though I use technology to track my exercise, listen to music, organise my thoughts, practise mindfulness, and capture photographs, I do not want every moment to become a number, a task, or a post. Sometimes, I put everything aside and simply enjoy where I am. I might reflect on my goals and the things I want to improve; on other days, I let my thoughts wander without trying to make sense of them. In a world that constantly encourages us to do more, these quiet mornings teach me the importance of slowing down and being present.

If there is one thing my morning routine has taught me, it is that taking care of yourself does not always require an elaborate plan, an expensive membership, or a perfect schedule. Sometimes, it begins with putting your feet on the floor, leaving your wonderfully cosy blanket behind, and opening the door. The hardest part may be getting outside, but the reward is a few kilometres of movement, a beautiful sunrise, a friendly greeting, a deer appearing unexpectedly, or a song that makes an ordinary morning feel magical. That is why my mornings outdoors are not just another item on my daily checklist. They are my favourite part of the day, my little space of freedom, and one of the simplest ways I know to take care of myself. And tomorrow morning, when my blanket tries its best to convince me to stay, I hope I remember that an entire valley is waiting outside.

Until next time, wake up early, go outside and let the sun see you rise!
